You wanna make sure anyone who makes it to the greatest bash <strong>EVER <\/strong>can give you accurate and relevant feedback.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how the pros do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Define your <\/strong><strong>target audience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a posh way of asking \u2018Who\u2019s the product for?\u2019 So the idea is to think of people likely to use your product.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are they in the Gen-Z, millennial, or baby-boomer demographic?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where are they located?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are they tech experts?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can then create user personas representing different profiles of your target audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can help you understand the audience and their perspective big time. You basically put yourself in the user\u2019s shoes. If not, you can extend your recruitment to other channels, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social media platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online forums or communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professional networks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Annoyed about how long it\u2019ll take you to reach out and contact participants?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <strong>consider employing <\/strong><strong>usability testing tools<\/strong> like UserTesting or UXtweak. These platforms already have a pool of users that\u2019ll likely match your target audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They basically record every detail of participants\u2019 mouse movements, facial expressions, and voice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, it takes audio recordings of users thinking out loud as they use the product. It provides valuable insight on what they think.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll have a database filled with suitable candidates for your research plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Embrace diversity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In your remote usability testing party, you can\u2019t have too many guests. There\u2019s no such thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people are the life of the party. Others are wallflowers. You need both to have a rollicking good time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This party principle applies to your testing pool too. You need a mix of peeps to reflect the real-world diversity of your target user base.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means using testers of different cultural backgrounds, locations, ages, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the party begins, there are a few more things you\u2019ll need to keep in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sample size. <\/strong>How many people on average should be involved in user testing per round? While there\u2019s no figure set in stone, a minimum of five to ten people is a good place to start.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Incentives.<\/strong> Spice up the deal by throwing in little rewards as a way to say \u2018thank you.\u2019 Nothing fancy or expensive; simple and thoughtful will do.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consent.<\/strong> If you\u2019re gonna get additional information from testers, seek their approval like they&#8217;re the life of the party. AKA select the different usability tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before things move further, make sure you\u2019re ready.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you explain all technical terms and jargon? You don\u2019t want to confuse people. Or are there any other final touches you need to add? How about the tools and devices you need to make available?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The preparation phase is where you answer questions like that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make it easy by splitting this phase into three sections:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preliminary questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-testing questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s break them down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preliminary questions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea here is to get testers comfortable before they get into the main task. Like the warm-ups before a match!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some research questions you could ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What are the testers\u2019 current roles?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are they familiar with similar products? If yes, what was their experience?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are their pain points and struggles?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do they come with any expectations about the product?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are they open to signing a consent form? An informed consent lets people know the terms of the study. It puts them at ease. And they\u2019ll make a decision about whether they want to voluntarily participate or not.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Feel free to add more questions you think might be relevant.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Testing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While warmups can help players prepare for a match, they\u2019re not the only thing. The coach (aka technical director) needs a good strategy that the players can follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FYI you\u2019re the coach in this case. And you need to be ready to get your players prepped for the game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of everything you wanna test in the prototype and get it ready for the participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can follow these steps when preparing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure you ask testers how they feel about the exercise \u2014 are they comfortable taking part?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you arrange the tasks in an order that\u2019s easy to understand.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide context for each task to make it easier for testers and get better results.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get everything you need to record testers on a task. This could be high-end PCs or software like Zoom for easy screen sharing.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Post-testing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The match is over. So, what happens next? Is it goodbye for everyone involved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not at all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s another opportunity to debrief and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markup.io\/blog\/design-feedback-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collect qualitative feedback<\/a> from participants. But you need to be prepared. Here are some questions you can ask participants post-test:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What feature stood out to you the most?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seen a platform with similar features before? If yes, what\u2019s it called?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think you\u2019d be likely to recommend this tool to your friends, colleagues, or stakeholders?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you share your experience in more detail? (<em>You might wanna prepare specific sub-questions for them to choose from.)&nbsp;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Last but not least, encourage testers to share any additional comments they may have.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"testing\"><strong>Step #4: Conduct <\/strong><strong>usability testing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s T-day people, and the most important aspect of this software testing show. The time to hear what your audience has to say about the product.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, you\u2019ve done the groundwork and prepared hard for this day. But there are still functions you need to carry out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set the stage for your users, especially if it\u2019s in-person testing. Create a library-like testing environment, free from distractions. A controlled environment means having a mediator help users complete tasks. Like a librarian shushing you up for speaking too loud.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Only there\u2019s no wrong or right answer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and make sure your product displays correctly on their screens. It should remain usable on various screen sizes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This way, the participants\u2019 focus is on interacting with your prototype.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Next, talk about time. \u23f2\ufe0fIt\u2019ll be useful for users to know how long it\u2019ll take to complete the test.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moreover, it\u2019s time to provide the game plan. You know, clear instructions about the different tasks users will engage in.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When testing starts, participants become tour guides on their own. But you can nudge them to carry you along by encouraging them to use the <strong>think-aloud approach<\/strong>. That means they\u2019ll be talking you through their thought processes as they navigate your prototype. This way, you get a sneak peek into their mind at that moment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Last but not least, ask their permission to record them on the testing adventure.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the testing show is on, your main job is note-taking and observing participants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You wanna pay attention to areas on the users\u2019 journey. Like where they paused. Or when there was a change in their facial expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These could be signs of confusion, surprise, or ease. It gives you clues about the areas that might need some improvement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what do you do with all the information you\u2019ve gathered?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple: You analyze and implement!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"analysis\"><strong>Step #5: Analyze (and optimize if necessary)&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The test is officially over, but you still have work to do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More specifically, analyzing the information you\u2019ve collected from participants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing you wanna do is classify results into these categories \u2014 normal, minor, major, and critical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You slap the <strong>normal<\/strong> label on issues that are negligible and quickly fixable. This could be a tester not liking a particular font.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You use a <strong>minor<\/strong> tag when feedback falls within the normal bracket and describes low-priority issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Major <\/strong>issues are a high priority and you\u2019ll need to fix them ASAP. An example would be the use of confusing terminologies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Critical<\/strong> issues are things like broken links and you\u2019ll most likely have to deal with them quickly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Secondly, collaborate with your teammates to identify patterns in the results you noted down.
